For one brief summer in the 1890s, it was the greatest attraction in Chicago, in all America, in fact, more visited and talked about than the world's fair it adjoined. Here, amidst Muslim mosques and Chinese pagodas, European castles and South Sea island huts, straw-hatted Americans came by the thousands to see Bedouin warriors, Egyptian belly dancers, lions that rode horseback and roller-skating bears. Over it all loomed the first giant Ferris wheel, taller than all but one downtown Chicago skyscraper.

The Midway Plaisance, written by Dr. Neil Gale, takes a historic look at the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition, which took place during the summer of 1893. Dr. Gale describes how the Midway quickly became the most popular (if also somewhat scandalous) park within the exposition by capitalizing on the modern (at the time) white-collar urban citizen’s need for entertainment and escape from the workaday world.Among its many splendid attractions, the Midway featured a 264-foot observation wheel, designed by the famous George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr., which was widely considered to be the Eighth Wonder of the World due to its size and grandeur. Dr. Gale's book displays a photograph of the historic ferris wheel on the front cover, and dedicates several chapters within to describe the construction and operation of this most prominent theme park attraction.
Other attractions included the “foreign villages,” featuring people, animals, music, dancing, food, wares, and other experiences from exotic locations around the world. Dr. Gale gives fascinating insight into these exhibits, complete with architectural photographs and interesting statistics regarding the gross income generated by many attractions during the park’s one-season operation. Some of the popular myths and fables surrounding these exhibits are also examined (and often debunked) in this book.
Dr. Gale does an excellent job of bringing to life not only the experience of attending the Midway Plaisance, but also an interesting perspective of how that historic park influenced the modern theme park as we experience it today. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in Chicago’s history, or that of theme parks. It was both an interesting and pleasurable read.

Dr. Gale is a historian's historian and "The Midway Plaisance" is not only meticulously sourced but a joy to read. It paints a visual and auditory picture of what the Midway Plaisance (Street of Nations) was like during the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago and it's significance in the history of World's Fairs and it's influence on the city of Chicago as well. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Chicago's colorful history and if your not interested, this book may change your mind.
I have always been fascinated by the 1893 World's Fair. I have read everything I can get my hands on, and watched many programs and movies about the fair. Dr. Gale's is the best book I have read on the subject! His insights are fascinating, and Dr. Gale's photos and illustrations are ones that I have not seen before. I find myself looking at this book time after time. This was money well spent!
Very well written book
If you enjoy learning about Chicago's fascinating history, this book is a must for your collection!
Excellent! I felt as if I had been at the 1933 World's Fair! All of the details were so very interesting and I enjoyed reading this book.
Loved it! It wasnt around long enough which was sad, just like the fair wasnt so theres only so much info. It was short but well written. If you're a buff of the White city or the worlds fair of 1893 it's a fun read . Its not a book bit more like a pamplet. Enough details though to get the general idea of the Midway.
